Rating of the best spray guns in 2024: electric and pneumatic

A spray gun, or, as it is also called, a paint gun is an important component with which you can achieve a high-quality paint coating. Thanks to its ease of use, uniformity of application, as well as high productivity, the spray has become an indispensable tool for painting in everyday life and in the professional sphere.

Types of spray guns

There are 3 types of paint spray guns:

  • pneumatic
  • electrical
  • mechanical.

We are more interested in the first two types, let us consider each of them in more detail.

Pneumatic spray guns

Pneumatic painting equipment is used to treat various surfaces by spraying paint composition. It is carried out by air, which is discharged under high pressure by the compressor. It connects to the atomizer with an air hose. A pneumatic tool is considered more reliable and safer than an electric one. They are characterized by the absence of sparking, overheating, and can be used in dusty and humid rooms.

When choosing a pneumatic spray gun, it is important to consider its main characteristics:

  • operating pressure;
  • air consumption;
  • the size of the container for the paint composition.

Based on the first two indicators, several types of spray nozzles are distinguished, depending on the spray technology. The most common of these are the following three:

  • HP - high pressure;
  • HVLP - Large Volume at Low Pressure;
  • LVLP - Low Volume at Low Pressure.

HP technology

Main characteristicsThe pressure in the nozzle at the outlet is 1.2-1.6 atm.
Inlet pressure - 2.5-5 atm.
Air consumption up to 190 l / min.
AdvantagesThe paintwork is applied evenly with a wide torch.
High performance.
High-quality work result.
Low cost.
disadvantagesPaint loss is up to 55%.
Additional comprehensive protection for the painter is required. The powerful air flow raises dust, which can settle on the still wet paint.
A powerful compressor is required.

HVLP technology

Main characteristicsThe outlet pressure is 0.7 atm.
Inlet pressure 2.5-3 atm.
Air consumption 230-300 l / min.
AdvantagesThe transfer percentage of the dye composition is up to 65%.
Due to the low pressure at the outlet, dust does not rise and debris does not settle on a dry surface.
More economical consumption of the paint composition.
disadvantagesA powerful compressor with high performance is required.
We need additional filters for the compressor to purify the air from all kinds of impurities.
The cost of such a tool is significantly higher compared to HP.

L VLP technology

Main characteristicsOutlet pressure 0.7-1.2 atm.
Inlet pressure 1.5-2 atm.
The volume of the consumed air is 170-200 l / min.
AdvantagesSaving paint and varnish material - transfer percentage from 70%.
Small volume of consumed air, which allows using a compressor of low power.
High speed of coloring due to high transfer coefficient.
disadvantagesMore suitable for professional use due to their high cost.

Another characteristic of spray guns is the location of the reservoir. It can be top and bottom. When the container is located at the top, the paint liquid flows naturally to the inlet, which ensures that the container is completely empty. The top or bottom position of the container only determines the ease of use in each specific case and does not affect the quality of the coating.

Summing up the characteristics of pneumatic paint spray guns, we highlight their main advantages:

  • high quality coating - the coloring compositions are applied in a uniform thin layer;
  • convenience and ease of use;
  • the possibility of using in dusty and damp rooms.

Along with the pros, there are noticeable cons:

  • for each sprayer, you need to carefully select a compressor with the appropriate characteristics;
  • colorful fog - losses cannot be avoided even with the best models;
  • more suitable for working with fairly liquid formulations.

Electric spray guns

There are several types of electrical devices, depending on the type of power supply and on the type of spray. By the type of food they are divided into:

  • network.

They are connected to the household power supply. Among them there are models with a built-in or external pump. When choosing a network model, the important parameters will be power (responsible for performance), the length of the power cord (more important for convenience).

  • rechargeable;

Runs on a rechargeable battery. Their incomparable advantage is functioning in the absence of the ability to connect to electricity, albeit for a short time. An important characteristic when choosing such a tool will be the battery capacity, because the duration of autonomous work largely depends on it.

There are 2 methods of spraying: air and airless.

  • Air electric spray guns.

They repeat the principle of operation of pneumatic counterparts, the only difference is the method of obtaining air volume. It is pumped by a built-in device or a free-standing electric motor. It is important to note that in pneumatic models, air is supplied at a high pressure, and these tools do not achieve this pressure.

Among the advantages of electric air spray guns are:

  • a thin layer of applied paint and, as a result, a high-quality coating;
  • convenience and mobility;
  • no need to select a compressor with the required characteristics;
  • you can choose equipment even for professional use.

Of the minuses, losses of coloring compositions and sufficient noise of the electric motor are most often distinguished.

  • Airless electric spray guns.

They are considered more versatile because airless technology allows for the spraying of high viscosity paint materials.

Their most important advantages include the absence of loss of the coloring liquid when spraying, no need for a powerful pump, the speed of the work performed, and low cost.

Among the disadvantages of the airless method, it is worth highlighting the higher consumption of working fluids, the greater thickness of the layer of the applied composition and, as a result, the low quality of painting.
